Without a doubt, Changi Airport is one of the best in the world because of its facilities. In fact, some people consider the airport as their “home” far away from home because of its myriad services and abilities. The good news is that the Kinetic Rain sculpture in the airport has been restored after it was destroyed last November. The sculpture is the largest of its kind in the world.

Apart from the Rain Sculpture, there are other valuable facilities that you can see in Changi Airport particularly in Terminal 1. Here’s a list:

What the Mind Can Conceive, It Can Be Achieved

Intelligence Reports 9 October 2013 | 0 Comments

Students from the Republic Polytechnic designed a mind control device that can control household appliances. With just one wink or a wiggle of an eyebrow, an appliance can be turned on or off. Students got their inspiration when they visited the Khoo Teck Puat Hospital; they realized that there are many disabled people there who need help and assistance.

Aside from turning on and off of household appliances, the brain is amazing enough to do other stuffs. You will be surprised of other breakthroughs using the brain. Here are some examples of breakthroughs using the brain:

brain

Music

In the field of music, the brain can compose and play it without the tools like sheet music and musical instruments. The idea was to create music directly with our thoughts. Seems impossible? No, with the use of EEG (Electroencephalography), electric signals from the brain will be interpreted into a computer.

Phone calls

A brainwave reading headset (that is attached to the mobile phone) monitors brain activity. If the device determines the user’s brain busy, it will reroute calls but if it perceives a not so busy state, it will accept the call.

Drive

Whether it is a wheelchair or a car, the brain can make it move. This is especially helpful for disabled people. The ability to move by using the mind is now possible. For example, a wheelchair made by Japanese scientists uses EEG to catch brainwaves. The EEG will then turn the brainwaves into directional commands.

Limbs

Scientists continue to develop a prosthetic limb which can form part of the natural arm; this can create a sense of touch or a lifelike feel. The limbs are connected to the neural system of the person which can perform tasks like gripping, holding, reaching, etc.

Driving Safely: The Don’ts of Driving

Cars and Transportation,Safety and Security 5 October 2013 | 0 Comments

Perhaps you heard about the car crash last March which sadly took the lives of three people. The findings showed that the driver had alcohol (above legal limit) on his system. As an addition to the findings, the car travelled between 100kmh to 120kmh which is beyond the speed limit. The crash was so devastating that the three (in the car) were believed to have been instantly killed.

driving-1

Crashing or road accidents in general can be prevented. This is a very serious thing so you should note the following tips to avoid car crash or road accidents:

  • Do not drink. Alcohol tends to cloud your judgment. If you want to make it home safe and sound, you should not drink at all. If it can’t be helped, at least make sure that you are far from being drunk. Even if you’re just tipsy, take a cab instead or ask a friend to drive you in your car.
  • Do not text. Your eyes should always be on the road. If the text is important, pull over so you can reply or call. You can use a headset so your hands can concentrate on the steering.
  • Do not drive when sleepy. As mentioned earlier, your eyes should always be on the road. Do not take your eyes off of it. If you cannot help but close your eyes, pull over and then nap for a few minutes before proceeding. Do not push your eyes if it needs rest.
  • Do not forget about your breaks and signal lights. Whenever you go out, regardless of the proximity of the place to your house, you should always check your breaks and signal lights. This can be the difference between life and death. If you notice anything wrong, should bring your car to mechanics and let fix it before you drive.
  • Do not ignore traffic lights. Do not try to beat the red light because it will only harm you. Even if you are late for your meeting or a dinner appointment, you should be patient when it comes to traffic lights. Do not rush things because it will only cause you harm.

The Minister for Environment and Water Resources Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan discussed the contingency plans in the public. Here’s a glimpse of the plan:

Dengue Prevention

Dengue assessments and inspections will continue. As a precaution, officers will wear N95 face masks. If in case the haze worsens and extended, NEA may decide to cut back outdoor hours but indoor inspections and use of insecticides will commence.

Waste Collection

Waste collections will not be stopped despite haze conditions. NEA announced that the frequency of waste collections will be decreased. From daily collections, it will be every other day.

Public Cleaning

Public places should always be cleaned but with haze, NEA decreases the frequency of cleaning depending on the haze condition.
