How to Avoid Rotten Teeth
Parents should know that more than half of Singaporean children have one (or more) rotten teeth by the time they enter the primary school. This is an alarming trend. One reason for the rotten teeth is the bacteria from the child’s milk which can halt the development of permanent teeth.
With this, the Singapore Health Promotion Board (HPB) will put in place oral care programmes that will commence in August. HPB is hoping to reach all childcare centres in 5 years. HPB is also encouraging the parents to help their children in terms of oral care.
Here are some ideas on how to avoid rotten teeth:
- Brush: You have to brush your teeth after eating. If it is not possible, at least brush your teeth twice a day. Brushing is an effective way to get rid of plaque. Plaque is a bacteria which clings to the teeth.
- Floss: Brushing is not enough. You should floss your teeth at least once a day. It gets rid of food particles that your toothbrush cannot reach.
- Visit the dentist: You have to go to your dentist regularly and have your teeth checked. Dentists will help your teeth become healthy. They can detect problems and address it immediately.
Rotten teeth can be prevented. Do not ignore it because it can have a lasting effect to your child. It is better to infuse oral care habits while they are young. As a parent, you have to be the role model. Always practice the things mentioned above so your children will follow you.
